When the agent reaches for it
The agent keeps every installed skill's description in view and loads the full instructions when a request matches. The license on this skill forbids copying its materials, so this page describes it rather than quoting it. Read the description at the source.
Two paths: new documents and existing ones
New documents are written with docx, the JavaScript library, and the skill lists the mistakes it tends to produce so the agent avoids them. After writing, the agent renders the file and checks the result instead of trusting the code.
Existing documents are edited at the XML level. The agent unpacks the file, merges the fragmented text runs Word leaves behind so a phrase can be found at all, edits the document XML in place, then repacks and validates it against the schema. That is slower than regenerating the file, and it is the only way to keep someone else's styles, numbering and letterhead intact.
- Tracked changes with a named author, checked by the validator.
- Comments anchored to the text they discuss.
- Legacy .doc files converted through LibreOffice before editing.
What ships with it
Besides SKILL.md, the folder carries these. The agent opens them only when a step in the instructions calls for one.

Install the word (DOCX) skill
In Claude Code, run this in a session. It comes from the publisher's own instructions.
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
/plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills This skill is proprietary. Its license allows use through the publisher's own services and forbids copying its materials out of them, so install it the way the publisher provides rather than copying files.
