Neon

Neon is a hosted MCP server for Neon Postgres. Its connected endpoint exposes 0 tools for branches, migrations and database queries after authorization.

Claude Code

Run this in your terminal. It adds a user-scoped server; use --scope project instead if it should apply only to the current project.

terminal
claude mcp add --scope user --transport http neon https://mcp.neon.tech/mcp

What it does

Neon MCP puts branch and database work in the agent's toolset. It is useful when a task needs an isolated database branch or a migration checked against the real schema.

  • Create and inspect Neon database branches.
  • Run migrations through the connected server.
  • Query a serverless Postgres database.
  • Pass project, branch and database identifiers explicitly.
  • Keep Neon authorization in the hosted connection.

Questions people ask

Does Neon MCP need an API key?

Not in Longwave. Longwave uses Neon sign-in.

  1. Click Add to Longwave on this page.
  2. Sign in to Neon when Longwave asks.
  3. Start a thread and pick a harness.
How do I use Neon MCP with Claude Code?

Claude Code can create Neon branches or inspect the schema.

  1. Click Add to Longwave on this page.
  2. Sign in to Neon when Longwave asks.
  3. Start a thread and pick Claude Code.
  4. Ask Claude Code to create a branch or inspect the schema.
How do I use Neon MCP in Cursor?

Cursor can create Neon branches or inspect the schema.

  1. Click Add to Longwave on this page.
  2. Sign in to Neon when Longwave asks.
  3. Start a thread and pick Cursor.
  4. Ask Cursor to create a branch or inspect the schema.
Can the agent try a migration on a branch first?

Yes. Neon can test the migration on a branch before it changes the original branch.

  1. Ask the agent to create a branch.
  2. Ask it to run the migration on that branch.
  3. Review the result.
  4. Confirm before changing the original branch.
Does a Neon branch include the parent's data?

Yes. It is a copy-on-write fork of the parent. Writes on the branch stay on the branch. That is different from Supabase branches, which start empty.

Can it fork staging, not only main?

Yes. Neon can fork the branch you choose before a migration.

  1. Give the agent the parent branch name.
  2. Ask it to create a branch from that parent.
  3. Run the migration on the new branch.
Is Neon MCP read only?

Yes. Longwave supports read-only Neon work when you use a database role with no write permissions. A broader role can also let the agent create branches or run migrations.

  • Use a read-only role when you only need inspection.
  • Connect a non-production project for write-capable work.
  • Ask the agent to run selects when you only need reads.
Can Neon MCP work with Drizzle?

Yes. Keep your Drizzle files in the repo. Neon MCP runs the SQL against a branch. It does not replace Drizzle.

What is the difference between Neon MCP and Supabase MCP?

Neon is Postgres branching and SQL. Supabase is a full backend project with auth and storage. Use Neon when the database is Neon. Use Supabase when the project is Supabase.

What is the difference between Neon MCP and Postgres MCP?

Postgres MCP is a connection string to any PostgreSQL. Neon MCP signs into your Neon account so the agent can create branches. You need that for isolated migrations.

Give database changes an isolated branch.

Let the agent test the migration against Neon before it touches the shared database.
