Install Excel

Choose a harness. These instructions start the same local MCP server shown on this page.

Claude Code

Run this in your terminal. It adds a user-scoped server; use --scope project instead if it should apply only to the current project.

terminal
claude mcp add --scope user --transport stdio excel -- uvx excel-mcp-server stdio

What it does

Excel MCP gives an agent workbook operations. It can inspect the spreadsheet structure and work with cells and formulas instead of treating an uploaded workbook as an opaque attachment.

  • Read workbook sheets and ranges.
  • Write spreadsheet values when supported.
  • Inspect and update formulas.
  • Work with workbook formatting through supported arguments.
  • Pass workbook paths explicitly and keep files on the intended machine.

Available functions

add_conditional_format Add a conditional format rule to a range. Rules apply in priority order (default: last); of conflicting formats the first rule met wins.

Arguments

path required
string
range required
string
rule required
sheet required
string
add_data_validation Restrict what can be entered in a range (list dropdown, numbers, dates, times, text length or custom formula), with optional input message and error alert.

Arguments

path required
string
range required
string
rule required
sheet required
string
add_slicer Add a slicer (Insert > Slicer) or timeline that filters a PivotTable or table. `selected_items` filters as clicking buttons does. A PivotTable not made by create_pivot_table keeps its old figures until Excel recalculates on open.

Arguments

at required
string
caption
string Default: the field.
columns
integer Button columns. Default: 1
connect
array More PivotTables sharing the target's data cache.
field required
string Column header or field, e.g. 'Months (Date)' for a date group.
height_cm
number Default: 7.4 (timeline: 3.8).
hide_empty_items
boolean Hide items without data.
name
string Default: the field name.
path required
string
selected_items
array Items to show. Default: all.
sheet required
string Sheet for the slicer.
sort
string Item order. Allowed values: ascending, descending Default: ascending
style
string e.g. SlicerStyleDark2, TimeSlicerStyleLight1 (timeline).
target required
Table or PivotTable to filter.
timeline
Make a timeline instead, for a date field of a PivotTable.
width_cm
number Default: 5.1 (timeline: 9.3).
add_sparklines Add sparklines (Insert > Sparklines) to the cells of `range`, one per row of `source` (per column when the cells match the columns). Replaces existing ones there.

Arguments

path required
string
range required
string One row or column, e.g. 'G2:G9'.
sheet required
string
source required
string Data, e.g. 'Data!B2:F9': a sparkline per row.
style
clear_range Clear a range's values, formatting and/or rules; cells do not move. Rules covering more than the range keep the rest.

Arguments

clear
string 'formats' includes conditional formats; 'rules': conditional formats and data validation only. Allowed values: contents, formats, rules, all Default: contents
path required
string
range required
string
sheet required
string
copy_range Copy and paste a range, overwriting the destination. Relative references shift as in Excel. Returns the destination.

Arguments

at required

string
skip_blanks
boolean Keep destination cells under empty source cells.
to_sheet
string Destination sheet. Default: `sheet`.
transpose
boolean
copy_sheet Copy a worksheet to a new last sheet, with everything on it, as Excel does. Self-references point at the copy; tables get new names (Sales2); PivotTables share the original's data.

Arguments

new_name required
string 1-31 characters, none of [ ] : * ? / \.
path required
string
sheet required
string
create_chart Add or replace a chart. Returns its name and cells. `source` is a plain block; `series` is for non-adjacent ranges, rows, names or other sheets, and combos (`type`, `secondary_axis` per series). Options that do not fit the chart type are rejected. For a PivotTable, leave out the Grand Total row and column.

Arguments

at
string Top-left cell. Omit for a new chart sheet named `sheet`.
categories
string Labels for series without their own.
chart_type required
string Excel 2016 types (waterfall to funnel) need `at`; they take no combo, trendline, colors or secondary axis. Allowed values: column, bar, line, area, pie, doughnut, radar, scatter, bubble, waterfall, histogram, pareto, box_whisker, treemap, sunburst, funnel
name
string Unique among the sheet's charts and images.

string 'rows': one series per row of `source`. Allowed values: columns, rows Default: columns
sheet required
string
source
string Header row, labels in the first column, a series per further column, e.g. 'A1:C13'. Scatter: x first. Bubble: x, y, size. Excel 2016 types: leading text columns are labels (levels), number columns the series.
create_pivot_table Add a PivotTable that summarizes a block of data. Returns its name and cells. Excel can refresh it; its figures (with subtotals and Grand Totals) are also written into the cells. A field can be used only once among row, column and filter fields.

Arguments

name required

path required
string
refers_to required
string Range with sheet, 'Data!$B$2:$B$100', or a constant, '0.075'.

text required
string
set_sheet_layout Set column widths, row heights, hidden or grouped lines, frozen panes, auto filter, tab color, visibility, position, view options, print setup and protection. Protection discourages edits in Excel but is not security (it does not stop this server; the password is weakly hashed).

Arguments

layout required
path required
string
sheet required
string
set_table Create a table, or change one: options, calculated columns and totals, resizing. An existing table of that `name` on the sheet is changed; otherwise `range` (with a header row of unique text labels) makes a new one, as in Excel.

options
path required
string
range
string New table: the range with its header row. Existing table: resize to this range (same top-left cell).

Arguments

path required

Arguments

path required
string
range required

sheet required
string
transform required
write_range Write values into cells, overwriting them, whatever the sheet's protection. Numbers, booleans and null (empties the cell) are stored as given. A string is text (even '00123'), except '=SUM(B2:B9)' is a formula (network, program or other-workbook references are rejected) and '2026-01-31' or '2026-01-31T09:30:00' a date. Formulas returning several values spill as in Excel; `blocked` lists those with data in the way. `links` make hyperlinks (http, https, mailto, places in the workbook).

Arguments

at required
string Top-left cell.
links
array Cells of the block to make hyperlinks.
path required
string
rows required
array Rows of values, written from `at`.
sheet required
string

Questions people ask

Which Excel MCP server should I use?

This catalog entry is the Excel server represented on this page. Check its live launch command and workbook requirements before copying a different repository's configuration.

How do I use Excel MCP Server with Claude?

Add the `uv`-based server to a Claude client that supports local MCP processes and provide the workbook path. The agent can use the spreadsheet operations returned by the process.

Can Excel MCP Server run in Python?

The catalog entry requires `uv`, which manages the Python runtime. Use the resolved `uv` launch command instead of a separate global Python environment.

Can Excel MCP read and write cells?

Cell and workbook operations are the entry's stated use case. The live function list shows whether this version supports reading, writing and which range arguments it accepts.

Can Excel MCP work with formulas?

Formula handling is part of the advertised spreadsheet workflow. Review the actual function descriptions before changing a workbook.

How do I download Excel MCP Server?

Use the catalog installation controls for the current source and launch command. Avoid downloading a similarly named package without checking its repository and workbook permissions.

Can Excel MCP Server work with Cursor?

Add the local server to Cursor's MCP settings and give it access to the workbook path. Cursor can use the sheet, range and formula operations after startup.

What does Excel MCP need to run?

The catalog entry requires `uv` and a workbook path. Run it on a machine that can access the intended Excel files.

Let the agent work in the workbook.

Give it sheets, ranges and formulas instead of asking it to reconstruct a spreadsheet from screenshots.
