Context7

Context7 is a hosted MCP server for bringing version-specific library documentation into an agent's context. Its connected endpoint exposes 2 tools when authorized.

Claude Code

Run this in your terminal. It adds a user-scoped server; use --scope project instead if it should apply only to the current project.

terminal
claude mcp add --scope user --transport http context7 https://mcp.context7.com/mcp

What it does

Context7 MCP is for the moment an agent reaches for a library API and should read the version the project actually uses. It keeps that documentation lookup separate from the agent's guesswork.

  • Find a library in the Context7 documentation index.
  • Resolve a library name to a documentation source.
  • Retrieve documentation for the version an agent needs.
  • Keep framework and package questions tied to source material.
  • Use the endpoint's live functions after authorization.

Available functions

query-docs Retrieves and queries up-to-date documentation and code examples from Context7 for any programming library or framework. You must call 'Resolve Context7 Library ID' tool first to obtain the exact Context7-compatible library ID required to use this tool, UNLESS the user explicitly provides a library ID in the format '/org/project' or '/org/project/version' in their query. Do not call this tool more than 3 times per question. If you know the programming language the user is working in, pass it as `language` so the results match their setup.

Arguments

language
string Programming language the user is writing code in, such as 'Python', 'TypeScript', 'Go', or 'C#'. Ranks code examples in that language first. Leave it out when the language is unknown or does not apply.
libraryId required
string Exact Context7-compatible library ID (e.g., '/mongodb/docs', '/vercel/next.js', '/supabase/supabase', '/vercel/next.js/v16.2.9') retrieved from 'resolve-library-id' or directly from user query in the format '/org/project' or '/org/project/version'.
query required
string What to look up in the library's documentation, scoped to a single concept. Be specific and include relevant details, but keep each query to one topic — if the user's question spans multiple distinct concepts, make a separate call per concept instead of combining them, unless the question is about how the concepts interact. Good: 'How to set up authentication with JWT in Express.js' or 'React useEffect cleanup function examples'. Bad (too vague): 'auth' or 'hooks'. Bad (too broad): 'routing and auth and caching in Next.js'. The query is sent to the Context7 API for processing. Do not include any sensitive or confidential information such as API keys, passwords, credentials, personal data, or proprietary code in your query.
resolve-library-id Resolves a package/product name to a Context7-compatible library ID and returns matching libraries. You MUST call this function before 'Query Documentation' tool to obtain a valid Context7-compatible library ID UNLESS the user explicitly provides a library ID in the format '/org/project' or '/org/project/version' in their query. Each result includes: - Library ID: Context7-compatible identifier (format: /org/project) - Name: Library or package name - Description: Short summary - Code Snippets: Number of available code examples - Source Reputation: Authority indicator (High, Medium, Low, or Unknown) - Benchmark Score: Quality indicator (100 is the highest score) - Versions: List of versions if available. Use one of those versions if the user provides a version in their query. The format of the version is /org/project/version. For best results, select libraries based on name match, source reputation, snippet coverage, benchmark score, and relevance to your use case. Selection Process: 1. Analyze the query to understand what library/package the user is looking for 2. Return the most relevant match based on: - Name similarity to the query (exact matches prioritized) - Description relevance to the query's intent - Documentation coverage (prioritize libraries with higher Code Snippet counts) - Source reputation (consider libraries with High or Medium reputation more authoritative) - Benchmark Score: Quality indicator (100 is the highest score) Response Format: - Return the selected library ID in a clearly marked section - Provide a brief explanation for why this library was chosen - If multiple good matches exist, acknowledge this but proceed with the most relevant one - If no good matches exist, clearly state this and suggest query refinements For ambiguous queries, request clarification before proceeding with a best-guess match. IMPORTANT: Do not call this tool more than 3 times per question. If you cannot find what you need after 3 calls, use the best result you have.

Arguments

libraryName required
string Library name to search for and retrieve a Context7-compatible library ID. Use the official library name with proper punctuation — e.g., 'Next.js' instead of 'nextjs', 'Customer.io' instead of 'customerio', 'Three.js' instead of 'threejs'.
query required
string What to look up in the library's documentation. This is used to rank library results by relevance to what the user is trying to accomplish. The query is sent to the Context7 API for processing. Do not include any sensitive or confidential information such as API keys, passwords, credentials, personal data, or proprietary code in your query.

Questions people ask

Does Context7 MCP need an API key?

Not in Longwave. Context7 still has its own usage limits.

  1. Click Add to Longwave on this page.
  2. Start a thread and pick a harness.
  3. Ask the agent to look up the library documentation.
How do I use Context7 MCP with Claude Code?

Claude Code can look up library documentation through Context7.

  1. Click Add to Longwave on this page.
  2. Start a thread and pick Claude Code.
  3. Ask Claude Code to look up the library documentation.
How do I use Context7 MCP in Cursor?

Cursor can look up library documentation through Context7.

  1. Click Add to Longwave on this page.
  2. Start a thread and pick Cursor.
  3. Ask Cursor to look up the library documentation.
Why does Context7 ask for a library ID?

Context7 resolves the package name before it fetches documentation.

  • Give the agent the package name and let Context7 resolve it.
  • Use an ID such as /org/project when you know it.
How does Context7 get version-specific documentation?

Context7 uses the version in your question or library ID when it has indexed that version.

  • Name the library and version in the question.
  • Use an ID such as /vercel/next.js/v14 when you know it.
Is Context7 free?

Context7 has a free tier and then limits. Those limits have been cut before. Longwave does not charge you for Context7 .

Who makes Context7?

Upstash.

Why did Context7 return the wrong library or old docs?

Yes. You can correct the lookup with an exact library ID and version. If Context7 still returns the wrong source, use Exa in Longwave to find the current official documentation.

  1. Start a thread and pick a harness.
  2. Give the agent the library name and version.
  3. Provide the Context7 library ID when you know it.
  4. Ask the agent to verify the result against the library's official documentation.
  5. Add Exa to Longwave when the indexed result is still wrong.
  6. Ask the agent to use Exa to find the current official documentation.
Should I use Context7 or Exa when the agent needs code examples?

Context7 provides versioned library docs and official API references. Exa searches the wider web for tutorials, examples, and discussions. Use Context7 to verify the API, then use Exa only when you need broader implementation context.

What is the difference between Context7 and Ref?

Both fetch docs for an agent. Context7 resolves a library ID, then queries that library. Ref searches documentation in one step. This page adds Context7.

Stop asking the agent to remember the API.

Give it the documentation for the library version in front of it.
